Meshtastic information

A young ham Benjiman, KO6CNT, recently brought it to my attention that Meshtastic is becoming popular among some of the new hams.  It’s economical, technical enough to keep their interest but not overwhelming, and allows for engaging with other hams.  Benjiman was curious to see what kind of Meshtastic contacts could be made if a skydiver were to jump with a Meshtastic node.  Enough said!  A small Meshtastic node will be part of each jump.

Meshtastic is a project that enables you to use inexpensive LoRa radios as a long range off-grid communication platform in areas without existing or reliable communications infrastructure.  This project is 100% community driven and open source!  You can learn more about Meshtastic at Meshtastic.org.

For those of you that have a Meshtastic node and want to see If you can make a contact, you’ll need to make the following modification to your node configuration.

Primary Channel: “PM”

User Preset: Medium Range-Fast

Default encryption

Keep in mind that line of sight will be 10,000 feet above Byron CA.

For this test a contact will simply be the fact that the you received a signal from the PM node.  The skydivers will not have the time to send texts as they will be making radio QSO’s.  We have no idea how this will turn out, but then that’s what it’s all about.

Practice jump today

Hello everyone. It’s Rob. Hoping to make a test jump within the next 2 hours with the new HF setup for Mission 45 taking place next Saturday. I want to discover any issue now rather than during the mission. The frequency will be 14.295 MHz. I’m hearing propagation isn’t so good today. We’ll see. I’ll be on APRS during the jump. Search my callsign, KC6TYD. No SSID. I’ll be above Byon Airport in Byron CA. I try my best to post again when I have a better ETA.

Sorry folks. We typically get about 20 minutes notice before the next load.  But the next load was the last load of the day and they put it on a “now call” which means if your ready to go load the plane now.  Had to rush and get on the pane and didn’t get a chance to post here before hand.  Oh well.  Good jump and I’m glad this was a test jump as I did experience an audio issue.

Hope to make a contact with next Saturday.

-Rob

Mission 44 coming soon!

I can’t believe it’s been 14 years!!!! It’s been a blast providing a unique
way to represent both amateur radio and skydiving. We are always making tweaks
to the setup for each Mission and trying to come up with new ideas. Please note
that there will not be an HF jump for this mission. We want to provide the
ability to make as many QSO as we can within the limited time we have in the
air, so we will concentrate our efforts on 2 meters. As soon as we have a ZOOM
link for streaming video, we will post it.

Check back for updates.

Rob Fenn, KC6TYD, Team Coordinator

“Mission 43 is in the books”

Thank you everyone that participated today. As usual we had some technical issues to deal with but our objective was met: we made contacts! Remember, if you made a contact, please email Skydivinghams@gmail.com let us know who you made a contact with, if you happened to know if it was jump 1, 2, or 3, and the approximate time of the contact. Give a few weeks and will send out a QSL card. If you were listening in and couldn’t make a contact, you too are eligible for a card as well. We use the addresses that are listed on QRZ that are associated with your call sign. We try to squeeze in another mission sometime in August, and of course we’ll be back as a Special Event for Pacficon, October 21st. Check back for updates, -73
